“Modern Traditions”
Three young South African composers, Cara Stacey, Arthur Feder and Nomapostile Nyiki worked under the guidance of Composers-in-Residence Lungiswa Plaatjies and Matthijs van Dijk exploring the concept of opposites. In collaboration with multi-media artist Naomi van Niekerk, their works will be premiered at this performance, followed by a discussion regarding the creative process, led by Lungiswa & Matthijs.

Filmmaker, Johnathan Andrews, presents the true story of Lina Kantor (Amato), one of the few remaining survivors of the Holocaust now residing in Cape Town, South Africa.
This extraordinary documentary film explores the rare account of how the interventions of the Turkish Consul-General on Rhodes Island in Greece, Selahattin Ülkümen, saved 42 Jews from deportation by the Nazis to Auschwitz during July 1944 – World War II.
Lina speaks from the heart as she guides viewers through the history of her time spent on Rhodes Island as a child, and how her family was saved through the efforts of Selahattin Ülkümen. Yad Vashem ultimately recognised him as “Righteous Among The Nations” in 1989.
The Story Of Lina Amato is an honest and unforgettable fragment of history in commemoration of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day – 27 January.

MOZART 360 VR SCREENING

MOZART 360 (short music film in Virtual Reality)
The innovative project Mozart 360° offers a singular immersion in a concert of classical music:
Mozart’s Coronation Mass is performed by the Insula Orchestra in a masterpiece of Flamboyant Gothic, the Cathédrale de Saint-Omer. Each spectator will be able to follow a staged journey made up of long-takes and 360° views from inside the orchestra thanks to a Virtual Reality film with 3D spatial sound.
This is a unique way of feeling the music; an “almost physical encounter” with Mozart’s work.
The experience is free and will be happening in the LInder Auditorium foyer before our Opening Concert on the 27th of January.

Richard Cock leads the audience through the fantastic orchestral story of Tintinyane, by 2015 Composer-in-Residence Peter Klatzow. The story is of an heroic girl who is captured by a forest monster, and whose brothers fail to save her. However, she makes a plan for herself and escapes. The programme includes various other orchestral works relating to heroes and villains.

The final concert of the Festival features a new commission by Composers-in-Residence Matthijs van Dijk and Lungiswa Plaatjies, performed by the unconventional and extremely popular Cape Town-based ShhArt Ensemble. In addition, the programme will include unusual and exciting South African works, featuring traditional African instruments, interfacing with a Western classical ensemble. This is an apt conclusion to our Festival of opposites and contrasts.
